Lisa Ballance, M.A., CPW, CCP, CHRC

Associate vice president for research

Lisa R. Ballance has more than 30 years of experience in research compliance, integrity, subject protections, clinical trials, and corporate and foundation relations.  She is committed to transparency, quality, collaboration, and public impact and oversees the Research Compliance Program, the Human Research Protection Program, the Animal Care and Use Program, and Regulatory Affairs which serve both VCU and VCU Health System. Ballance also leads core elements of VCU’s research strategy, internal funding program, and collaboration with the Office of the Provost.  Her professional commitment is to serve by growing leaders, expanding quality, and designing ways to evaluate program effectiveness. Ballance previously served as the Senior advisor to the vice president for research and innovation at VCU and Executive director for research compliance. Ballance earned a bachelor’s degree in scientific and technical writing, a master's degree in rhetoric and applied ethics, and has achieved numerous publications and certifications in her field, including board certification in health research compliance.  Ballance has recently been elected to AEREO, the Consortium to Advance Effective Research Ethics Oversight. She emphasizes the importance of servant-leadership while maintaining the ‘balance’ that allows her to also be a dedicated partner, friend, mentor, parent of three, and paddleboard with her Vizsla.
